Early Life and Education

Gavin James Wood was born in Lancaster, England. He attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School before pursuing higher education at the University of York, where he earned a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Computer Systems and Software Engineering in 2002. Wood completed his PhD in 2005 with a thesis titled "Content-based visualization to aid common navigation of musical audio."

Career Beginnings

Before his involvement with blockchain technology, Wood worked as a research scientist at Microsoft. His early career focused on computer systems and software engineering, providing a strong foundation for his later contributions to decentralized technology.

Ethereum Foundation

Co-Founding Ethereum

In 2013–2014, Wood co-founded Ethereum alongside Vitalik Buterin, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin. He described Ethereum as "one computer for the entire planet," envisioning a global, decentralized computing platform that would revolutionize how applications are built and deployed.

Technical Contributions

Wood played a pivotal role in Ethereum's technical development. He proposed and helped develop Solidity, the programming language for writing smart contracts on Ethereum. In 2014, he authored the Ethereum Yellow Paper, which formally defined the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the runtime environment for smart contracts.

As the Ethereum Foundation's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Wood oversaw the technical direction and implementation of the Ethereum network. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Ethereum through its early development phases.

Departure from Ethereum

Creating Polkadot

As Polkadot's primary architect, Wood led the development of its innovative consensus mechanisms, governance systems, and cross-chain communication protocols. The platform's launch in 2020 marked a significant milestone in blockchain technology.

Kusama Network

Wood also created Kusama, Polkadot's "canary network" designed for experimentation and testing. Kusama allows developers to deploy and test new features in a live environment before implementing them on Polkadot.

The network has become a hub for innovative blockchain projects and has undergone significant stress testing, including the 2024 "Spammening" event that demonstrated its high-throughput capabilities.
