What Is JAM?
JAM, the Join-Accumulate Machine, is the next big evolution of Polkadot. Designed by Gavin Wood and described in his 2024 Gray Paper, it aims to turn Polkadot's core into a general-purpose decentralised supercomputer.
UpdatedThe idea in plain English
Today, Polkadot's core secures a set of connected blockchains. JAM generalises that. Instead of only running blockchains, the core becomes a shared computer that anyone can build on, whether their project is a blockchain, a smart contract platform or something new entirely.
The name describes how work flows through it. Heavy computation happens in parallel across many cores, the join side, and the results are then brought together into one shared state, the accumulate side. That is how JAM aims to scale without giving up security.
Why people are excited
- More flexibility. Builders are not limited to one model. JAM is designed to host many kinds of applications on the same secure core.
- Built for scale. Work spreads across many cores in parallel instead of queueing on one chain.
- Open implementation. JAM is defined by a public specification, and independent teams around the world are building their own clients in many programming languages, backed by a large prize from the Web3 Foundation.
Where JAM stands today
JAM is not live on Polkadot's main network yet. As of 2026 it is in its testing phase, with many independent teams building and testing implementations. Current roadmaps point to a production launch around 2027, subject to Polkadot's on-chain governance. We will keep this page updated as that changes, and The Relay covers the news as it happens.
What it means for $WUD
Nothing changes for $WUD holders today. $WUD lives on Polkadot Asset Hub and Hydration, and a stronger, more scalable Polkadot is good for everything built on it. We believe in the technology, which is why we are here. Read about Gavin Wood's vision.
Questions people ask
What does JAM stand for?
JAM stands for Join-Accumulate Machine. It is Polkadot's next-generation core design, introduced by Gavin Wood in the JAM Gray Paper in 2024.
Is JAM live?
Not on Polkadot's main network yet. As of 2026 it is being built and tested by many independent teams, and current roadmaps point to a production launch around 2027, decided through Polkadot governance.
Will JAM affect my DOT or $WUD?
Nothing changes for holders today. JAM is an upgrade to Polkadot's core. Tokens on Polkadot Asset Hub and Hydration, including DOT and $WUD, stay where they are.
